How affiliate tracking works

Written by Maris Niilus

Know exactly which creators are driving revenue. Modash connects every affiliate link and discount code to real Shopify sales, so you can see who's converting, how much they're earning, and where your budget is working hardest - all within minutes of a purchase.

Link-based tracking

When a creator shares their unique affiliate link, Modash places a cookie in the visitor's browser. If that visitor makes a purchase within 30 days, the sale is attributed to that creator. No extra steps needed.

Modash uses a last-touch attribution model. If a customer clicks multiple affiliate links from different creators, the most recent click gets the credit.

πŸ’‘ If a customer disables cookies, links cannot be tracked.

Here's how it works in practice:

  • A customer clicks Creator A's link on Monday

  • The same customer clicks Creator B's link on Wednesday

  • The customer purchases on Friday without using any link or code

  • Creator B receives the commission (most recent click within 30 days)

Discount code tracking

Creators can also use discount codes to track sales. When a customer applies a creator's discount code at checkout, that sale is attributed to the creator who owns the code.

Affiliate discount codes always take priority over link attribution. If a customer clicks one creator's link but uses a different creator's affiliate discount code at checkout, the creator who owns the code gets the commission.

⚠️ Important: Non-affiliate codes do NOT block link attribution. If a customer clicks an affiliate link but uses a non-affiliate discount code at checkout (like a sitewide promo or volume discount), the affiliate link still gets credit and the creator still receives commission. Only affiliate-assigned codes override link attribution.

What you can see in your tracking data

Attribution data typically appears within 10-15 minutes after a purchase, as Shopify's customer journey data needs time to become available. For each creator, you'll see:

  • Link clicks and conversion rates

  • Total sales attributed

  • Commission amounts earned

  • Order values and order count

  • Which link or code generated each sale

You can view all of this in Track under Orders, alongside engagement and content metrics in your campaign overview for the complete picture of creator impact.

Manual commissioning

Sometimes a creator drives a sale but the automatic attribution doesn't capture it (e.g., the customer didn't use the link or code). You can manually commission these orders from the campaign's Orders tab using the three dots in the order. This lets you attribute the sale to a creator even when automatic tracking missed it.

How commissions are calculated

Commissions are based on net revenue: order total minus shipping, taxes, returns, and refunds. If a discount code is applied, the commission is calculated on the post-discount amount.

Creator visibility

Creators get their own dashboard showing order dates, prices, commissions earned, payment timelines, and which link or code generated each sale. Full transparency means happier creators who understand their performance and know exactly when to expect payment.

Pro tip: Embed your creators discount code into their link. This means that the code will automatically be applied to a customers cart once they click the creators link!

When attribution might not work

There are a few scenarios where automatic attribution can fail:

  • Cookie consent (GDPR/CCPA): If a customer rejects marketing cookies, link-based tracking may not capture the referral.

  • Accelerated checkouts: Shop Pay, Apple Pay, Google Pay, and PayPal Express can sometimes bypass the tracking scripts.

  • Cross-domain checkouts: If your landing page is on a different domain than your Shopify checkout, tracking may not carry across. Make sure affiliate links point directly to your Shopify store domain.

In these cases, you can always use manual commissioning to attribute the sale to the right creator.

FAQs

  • What's the tracking window for affiliate links?

30 days. If a customer clicks a creator's link and purchases within that window, the creator earns the commission.

  • What happens if someone clicks multiple affiliate links?

Last-touch attribution applies. The most recent creator link gets credit for the sale.

  • What if a customer uses both a link and a discount code from different creators?

Affiliate discount codes override link attribution. The creator who owns the code gets the commission. However, if the code isn't assigned to any affiliate (like a sitewide promo), the link creator still gets the commission.

  • What if a customer uses multiple affiliate discount codes?

If both codes are assigned to different affiliates, the commission is split between the creators.

  • How quickly does tracking data update?

Typically within 10-15 minutes after a purchase is completed in Shopify. High-volume periods may occasionally extend this.

  • How are commissions calculated?

Based on net revenue: order total minus shipping, taxes, returns, and refunds. Discounts are applied before commission calculation.

  • Can I track sales from platforms other than Shopify?

No. Modash affiliate tracking works exclusively through the Shopify integration.

  • Do I need to use both links and discount codes?

No, you can use either or both. Many brands use both for maximum tracking coverage across different customer journeys.

  • What if an order wasn't automatically attributed to a creator?

You can manually commission it. Go to the campaign's Orders tab, find the order, and use the Actions column to attribute the sale to the right creator.
